Sustainability | Island Waste
We aim to reduce the impact of waste on the environment. Our processes align with the waste hierarchy, prioritising reuse and recycling. Our state of the art plant and equipment maximises the potential from your waste to achieve this.
We divert more than 10,000 tonnes of waste to be re-used, recycled or recovered every year.
Reduce
The most sustainable decision you can make with your waste is reducing the amount you generate. Ask yourself, “Do I need this item?”
Reuse
Reusing items before they become waste extends the life of your items, and reduces the requirement for resources.
Recycle
When waste arrives with us, it means Reduce and Reuse options are not possible. Our goal from here is to keep as much of your waste in the recycling category as possible.
Recovery
If your waste cannot be recycled we will move it into the recovery category. Here waste will be sent to an Energy-from-Waste facility where it will be burnt to generate power for homes and businesses. It is not being recycled but it is providing a power resource to reduce the amount of fossil fuels required to provide energy on our planet.
Landfill
The place we don’t want your waste to end up! At Island Waste we have reduced our landfill input to less than 3%.??
If your waste ends up here it means the resource potential of your waste has been lost. It also means the buried waste presents environmental challenges to the surrounding areas, inquiring careful management and monitoring.
